About us: a permaculture farm
What does a permaculture farm grow? On our farm, we have nut trees, berry bushes, perennial herbs and vegetables, mushrooms, and small animals. We have planted hundreds of trees: pecans, walnuts, chestnuts, and almonds, which will start to provide delicious, healthy nuts 5-10 years from now. We have also planted rows and rows of berries - the well-loved blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, and lesser-known but upcoming super-berries - seaberry, aronia, goji, hardy kiwi and cornelian cherry. Around the trees and shrubs, we plant perennials like sage, leeks, onions, and kale and mushrooms. We also keep sheep and chickens (try our rainbow eggs!).
Why permaculture? The community of plants, fungi, and animals works together - each part providing nutrients and protection for other parts. A permaculture food forest mimics natural ecosystems and can repair environmental damage. We want to have a Big Footprint: to improve soils and wildlife habitat, sequester carbon and contribute to stabilizing the climate, share with the community, and harvest lots of yummy food! Impossible? Let's find out!
Through these permaculture processes, we also aim to learn and grow from the land. As the Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka wrote, "The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings."
The Big Foot Edible Forest Gardens is located in Needham, MA, and the Big Foot Food Forest Farm is located in Montague, MA.
